Registry Wedding FAQ - Mackay & Central Queensland
How far in advance should we lodge our Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)?
Your NOIM must be lodged at least one month before your wedding date, but can be lodged up to 18 months in advance. We recommend lodging early to avoid timing issues.
What documents do we need to provide with our NOIM?
You'll need: Birth certificate or passport (for proof of date/place of birth), photo ID (driver's licence, passport, etc.), if previously married: divorce papers or death certificate of former spouse. Any documents not in English must be officially translated.
Do you attend registry weddings in Mackay and surrounding areas?
The Mackay Marriage Office specializes in paperwork-only registry weddings conducted at a table or desk throughout Mackay, Bucasia, Walkerston, Whitsundays, Sarina, Proserpine, and Moranbah. This legals-only service is typically provided before or after a ceremonial celebration. Full ceremony attendance available at additional cost.
What are your registry wedding fees in Central Queensland?
Our paperwork-only registry wedding fees (inc GST) are: Simple Marriage Service: $700, Witness Service: $130, Official Marriage Certificate: $70, After Hours Service: $300 (before 9am/after 9pm). Travel fees may apply for locations beyond Mackay metropolitan area including Bucasia, Walkerston, Whitsundays, Sarina, Proserpine, and Moranbah. We accept Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, bank deposit, cash, and PayID.
How does your paperwork-only registry wedding differ from traditional ceremonies?
Our paperwork-only registry wedding service in Central Queensland focuses exclusively on legal requirements - completing and signing marriage documentation with witnesses present. This simple wedding ceremony takes 5-10 minutes to recite the required 120 words and complete paperwork, without traditional ceremony elements like music, decorations, or extended vows.
Do we need to provide witnesses?
Yes, you need two witnesses aged 18 or over. We can provide witnesses for an additional fee of $130 (inc GST).
Can we get married the same day we lodge our NOIM?
No. There is a mandatory one-month waiting period unless you obtain a shortening of time from a prescribed authority.
Do we both need to sign the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) together?
No, you can sign with different witnesses at different times and days. Once one party's signature has been witnessed by an authorised witness and the celebrant has received it the one month waiting period begins.
If I've changed my name, which name should I use on the NOIM?
You must use your current legal name, which should be supported by official documentation (birth certificate, change of name certificate, or marriage certificate).
What if my documents are not in English?
All foreign language documents must be translated by a NAATI accredited translator. Both original documents and translations must be provided.
When do we receive our marriage certificate?
You'll receive a ceremonial certificate on the day. The official certificate must be ordered separately through Births, Deaths and Marriages Queensland.
Do we both need to sign the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) to begin the one month period?
If one party is unable to sign the NOIM before one month before they would like to marry, one party's signature is enough to begin the one month waiting period.
Where can we hold our registry wedding in the Mackay region?
We conduct paperwork-only registry weddings throughout Central Queensland including: your home in Mackay, Bucasia, or Walkerston; local cafes and restaurants; beautiful beaches along the Whitsundays coast; public parks in Sarina or Proserpine; mining accommodation in Moranbah; or any venue of your choice. Travel fees apply for locations beyond the greater Mackay area.
What if one of us lives overseas?
You can lodge your NOIM from overseas by having it witnessed by an Australian Consular Officer, Australian Diplomatic Officer, or notary public.
Can the one-month notice period be shortened?
Yes, but only in exceptional circumstances and only after: 1) Your NOIM has been lodged with us, 2) You apply to a prescribed authority with substantial supporting evidence, 3) The authority approves your application. Approval is never guaranteed.
How do I change my name after a registry wedding in Queensland?
Your official marriage certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages Queensland can be used to update your name with banks, employers, Medicare, Centrelink, and other organisations throughout Central Queensland. Some institutions may require additional documentation for name changes.
