Marriage Requirements in Mackay
If you want a simple legal marriage in Mackay, the rules are the same as anywhere else in Australia.
To get married legally, you must:
- be 18 or older, unless a court has approved an underage marriage
- not already be married
- not be marrying a parent, child, sibling, or another prohibited relative
- understand what marriage is
- freely consent to the marriage
- give a NOIM at least one month before the marriage
- be physically present at the marriage
- have two witnesses who are 18 or older
Documents you usually need
- a birth certificate or passport
- photo ID if needed
- divorce papers if previously married
- a death certificate if widowed
- translations if documents are not in English
The ceremony requirements
Even a paperwork-only marriage still needs:
- an authorised celebrant
- the required legal wording
- two adult witnesses
- signatures on the marriage documents
If one of you is overseas
That is usually fine. There is no citizenship or residency requirement to marry in Australia. The paperwork just needs to be handled properly and the marriage itself must still happen in person.
If you need help
Use NOIM Easy to prepare the form, then check ID requirements, who can get married, and one month notice.

Click the Get Married link to get started. You book and pay first, then prepare your NOIM, have it witnessed, and send it to us. Once we receive the paperwork, we confirm the date, time, and place based on availability. We are private celebrants, not a government registry. Need a full ceremony? Josh Withers. Need an elopement?
