NOIM Guide for Mackay Couples

If you want to get married with us, you need a Notice of Intended Marriage, usually called a NOIM.

The easiest way to prepare it is with NOIM Easy. It takes you through the form step by step and gives you a completed PDF ready to print.

The short version

  • Every legal marriage in Australia needs a NOIM.
  • The NOIM must be given to your celebrant at least one month before the marriage.
  • It can be given up to 18 months before the marriage.
  • It must be signed in front of an authorised witness.
  • You need to provide your supporting identity documents as well.

What goes on the NOIM

The form asks for details such as:

  • your full legal names
  • your dates and places of birth
  • your current addresses
  • your parents’ names
  • whether you have been married before
  • any name changes

The details should match your documents as closely as possible.

Who can witness it

If you are in Australia, the NOIM can be witnessed by an authorised marriage celebrant, justice of the peace, lawyer, doctor, or police officer.

If you are overseas, it can be witnessed by an Australian diplomatic or consular officer, a notary public, or another authorised person.

Can one person sign first?

Yes. If the other person’s signature cannot conveniently be obtained at least one month before the marriage, one signed NOIM can still start the notice period. The other person must still sign before the marriage is solemnised.

What else do we need with the NOIM?

You will usually need:

  • a birth certificate or passport
  • photo ID if required
  • divorce papers if previously married
  • a death certificate if widowed
  • translations for documents that are not in English

See requirements and ID requirements for the full list.

What happens after the NOIM?

After you book and pay, prepare the NOIM, have it witnessed, and send it to us with your documents. Once the paperwork is received, we confirm the date, time, and place based on availability.
