Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

Who Can Get Married in Australia?

Most adults can get married in Australia if they meet the legal requirements.

You can usually get married if you:

  • are 18 or older
  • are not already married
  • are not marrying a prohibited relative
  • understand what marriage means
  • freely consent to the marriage

Do you need to be Australian?

No.

You do not need to be:

  • an Australian citizen
  • a permanent resident
  • living in Australia long term

You just need to meet the legal requirements and be physically present for the marriage.

What about people under 18?

Marriage under 18 is rare and tightly restricted. If a person is 16 or 17, a court order is required before the marriage can happen.

Same-sex couples

Yes. Marriage is open to two people regardless of gender.
