Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

Overseas Marriages and Australia

Most marriages legally performed overseas are recognised in Australia.

Usually, Australia will recognise the marriage if:

  • it was valid in the country where it happened
  • it would not be prohibited under Australian law

You usually do not need to register it again in Australia

What you often do need is:

  • the overseas marriage certificate
  • a translation if it is not in English

If you are unsure about a specific overseas marriage, get legal advice.
